Medusae Sea Glass

About

The sea glass for this pendant was collected during the dark and isolating Covid 19 lockdown along the rocky shore between Edward’s and Chinaman’s beach.

Frosty and soft to the touch, the glass was found in every shape, size and colour after being pummelled and washed up along the rocks in a process which can take 20-40 years.

Sea glass is a beautiful and mysterious object that has held spiritual and symbolic meaning for centuries. In mythology, the ancient Greeks believed the gods of the sea created sea glass to bestow luck and protection upon those who found it. In some Caribbean cultures, sea glass represents the tears of mermaids and offers protection from evil spirits whilst in ancient Egypt sea glass was used for healing.

Sea glass is seen as a symbol of transformation and renewal representing the journey of life. This reflects the transformation of the glass by the sea from a sharp-edged shard to a smooth frosted object of original beauty.

Symbolism can also be bestowed by the colour of the glass and the place from which it was found.

White – innocence, clarity, purity.

Blue – calmness, peace, tranquillity.

Green – renewal, growth, nature.
