Lamps
In darkness there is light. In light there is hope.
Porcelain Lights
For indoor use only!
Thank you for purchasing one of my hand-made porcelain shell lamps. I hope you get as much enjoyment from it as I have making it.
Please note that every porcelain shell is unique, being individually moulded and hand finished. As such, subtle variations in finish are normal, to be expected and contribute to the distinctive character of each lamp.
Your porcelain lamp may be displayed on the frame or backing supplied (if your lamp was purchased with a frame or backing), or may be installed with the base fixed directly to a wall or other vertical surface (E.g. a mirror, cupboard or joinery item). These lamps look fantastic and work well as wall or feature lights.
Should you wish to fit your lamp directly to a wall or other vertical surface, the lamp base can be unscrewed from its frame or backing and fixed directly to the wall.
If you intend to fix the lamp base directly to a wall or other vertical surface, ensure that the surface provides a sound and secure fixing.
In such circumstances you may choose to hardwire the piece to the wall, cupboard or joinery item.
Should it be necessary to re-wire the fitting for this purpose the installation should be undertaken by a licensed electrician.
In some cases you may be able to utilise the transformer provided subject to the advice of the licensed electrician responsible for the installation. The electrical components are standard 12V fittings which any licensed electrician should be familiar with.
Otherwise, your electrician may prefer to provide a transformer specifically selected to suit the requirements of your installation and/or your lighting system.
How to remove the porcelain shell to clean and/or change a globe
It may be necessary, on occasions, to remove the porcelain shell from the lamp base. For example, this may be required when you need to move the lamp or clean the porcelain shade. And this will be necessary when you need to change a globe.
Be sure to disconnect the power supply before removing the porcelain shell to change a globe, clean or move the piece.
Note: The porcelain shell is loosely attached to a circular lamp base behind the shell.
The porcelain shell is loosely attached to its base and secured with small levers located under the base. The levers adjust toggles that retain the porcelain shell and retain it on the base.
Note that the toggles are designed not apply any direct pressure to the porcelain shell. The shell is restrained loosely by the toggles, and it is normal for there to be some movement of the shell, even when the toggles are closed.
To remove the porcelain shell, use a wooden skewer or chopstick to gently move the lever as necessary to release or secure the porcelain shell.
Once the lever is released the shell can be gently lifted upwards and toward you to remove it from the base.
The globe can then simply be removed and replaced with a new 12V bi-pin globe. Globe: These globes are readily available from most hardware and electronics suppliers (Life expectancy: 3-4 years depending on frequency of use).
Reverse the previous procedure to return the porcelain shell to the base taking care to ensure that the shell is positioned over the fixed lugs of the base.
Then take care to ensure that the levers are toggled to the closed position and that the porcelain shell is loosely but securely held in place.
Globes
Use only 12V bi-pin LED globes.
These globes are readily available from most hardware stores, electrical and/or electronic suppliers.
Under normal conditions these globes should last for 3-4 years of regular use.
The globes provided are 2W. Any replacement globe in the order to 1.5W - 3W should work well. Note that generally the higher the wattage the brighter the light.
Note also, the globes provided are warm white 3000K.
The colour temperature of the globe will greatly affect the appearance of your lamp. In my opinion “Warm white (3000K or less)” typically works best with the type of porcelain used to make these lamps.
Transformer
The globe used is a 12V (low voltage) Bi-pin LED globe.
A 240-12V transformer is required to run these lamps off a standard 240V power point.
The transformer supplied and wiring of the piece has been tested by a licensed electrician.
Cleaning your porcelain lamp
It is recommended that you gently dust your lamp regularly to avoid the build-up of dirt and grime.
If required, your lamp can be washed with warm mild soapy water:
First remove the shell from its base (refer to “how to remove the porcelain shell”).
Using a soft lint-free cloth, wipe over the surfaces of the shade with firm but gentle circular movements. Take care to clean between any grooves.
Rinse the shade with cold water to remove any residue.
Gently dry with a clean, lint free cloth.
Ensure your porcelain shell is thoroughly dry before refitting it to its base.
