Urchin

About

Sea urchins, known as the echidnas of the sea, are spiky echinoderms with a vulnerable but delicious centre! The urchin’s shell or test with its fivefold symmetry has captivated artists and beachcombers over the centuries, including Aristotle who described the anatomy of sea urchins in his History of Animals.

Maintaining marine habitat is essential for the health of the marine ecosystem and ultimately the planet. The loss of kelp forests can lead to a serious cascade effect on the marine ecosystem affecting the natural balance of sea creatures such as crayfish and sea urchins. A boom in urchins which feed on crayweed further reduces the capacity of kelp to act as a vital carbon sink.
